Are you looking to give your kitchen a facelift with new countertops? Home Run Solutions is here to help with all of your kitchen counter needs.
When it comes to the aesthetic value of your home, the kitchen can be the show-piece. Keeping your kitchen up to date is important in preserving the beauty of your home and can be done periodically through remodeling. If a total kitchen remodel doesn’t fit your budget, you can still freshen the space by considering new kitchen countertops. Many of our clients have been amazed by what a simple countertop upgrade did for the look and value of their home.
If you’re considering a countertop upgrade, it helps to know your options. There are several popular types of counters that are commonly installed these days. Each type has different considerations for cleanliness and hygiene.
The Importance of Clean Counters
Since all of your food preparation happens in the kitchen, your countertops will be subjected to a lot more abuse than other surfaces in your home. It is important that food prep areas be kept clean from harmful pathogens that could contaminate your food so they must be cleaned regularly to remove grease and food residue.
Depending on the material of the countertop, it may contain tiny pores that could harbor bacteria, viruses, and fungus. Picking out and maintaining your material of choice will be crucial in reducing these threats.
Types of Countertops
Today’s countertops are being manufactured with a wide variety of materials, each possessing different characteristics and benefits. As a consumer, there are virtually limitless options you can choose from as you consider things like color, material, and longevity. Some of the types of countertops that are available include:
- Quartz- Quartz countertops are made from an aggregate of quartz and resin, making them non-porous. As such, they are the most hygienic and durable options available. Quartz is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Quartz currently seems to be the most sought-after surface in kitchen remodeling.
- Granite- Granite is a natural product, cut in slabs straight from gigantic stones where it formed in the Earth millions of years ago. Granite also comes in a wide varietyof spectacular colors. Granite is somewhat porous however, so it’s recommended that it be professionally sealed to prevent foodborne illnesses.
- Solid Surfaces- Solid surface countertops (such as the brand name Corian) is amanmadeproduct that mimics granite, marble or other natural occurring stones. They are non-porous, stain-resistant, and food safe.
- Laminate- Laminates have come a long way since the monotone and faux-stone looks of the 1980s. New laminates come in a staggering variety of colors and patterns. Typically, they are one of the more affordable options.
- Butcher Block: Wood Butcher Block is also a popular option. Typical butcher block comes from the mill in predetermined sizes and is sealed on all sides. The manufacturer does warn that cutting directly on these counters will void the warranty, so it is best that you still use a cutting board to preserve the look and prevent bacteria growth.
How to Clean Countertops
The first step for clean countertops is to make sure your surfaces are either non-porous or professionally sealed to prevent bacterial growth. With any material, be sure to avoid harsh chemical cleaners and abrasives. Typically, a soft cloth and dish soap will yield the results that you want.
While most countertop materials are durable, be sure to use a cutting board instead of cutting on your countertops. This will also save your knives. Avoid putting hot pots and pans on the surfaces as this can warp or discolor some synthetic materials.
